Are mountain bicycles good for street riding? I need a bike to get to work about 8 mile ride.

    Hi Dan:

They are great for street riding with just a few changes:

    1. Get smooth street tires — “slicks” — to replace the knobby dirt tires that mountain bikes come with. This will reduce road noise and increase your speed.

    2. If you have a front shock on the mountain bike, see if there’s a way to lock it out or reduce the travel in it. The shock bobbing up and down while riding on the street will sap energy from the drive train and slow you down. However, if the roads that you’re riding on are rough, don’t lock out the shock travel completely.

It’ll work just fine. 8 miles isn’t that far, and you’re not racing.

I’ve been using a very rugged mountain bike on the streets for a few years now and it hasn’t given me any problems. Yes, you will have a bit more resistance because of the off road tires but it is nice in case the road isn’t in good shape or you decide to take a dirt road detour. Road bikes are a bit harder to ride and are a bit more costly but they are faster and more efficient. So what it really boils down to is how fast you want to get there and what shape your in, but yes a mountain bike will work just fine.

You can ride it but it won’t be the most efficient means of transportation. A road bike or a commuter bike would make for a faster ride.

Sounds like a hybrid bike would suit you best.

MTB’s aren’t bad on roads, but locking out your suspension fork (If you can) and running slicker tyres, like Maxxis’ High Roller SS would make it a lot more road-efficient.

it will be fine, however due to their heavy weight and knobby tires they have more rolling resistance than a lightweight road bike with slicks on it. think of it like walking in cleats on a surface other than dirt, not that hard but noticeably harder than the alternative.

no joke, i ride my bike 8 1/2 mile to work and i ride a giant trance x2 09, and it really runs great.

    Pros:
1.You can take short cuts witch if you have a 8 mile ride and your city is crappy bicycling conditions them you may have to take.
2.I carry so much in my backpack that its nice to have more stability

    Cons:
    1.slower
